Black & White - 2006
This is a poplar headpiece carved ovoid, by far the most geometric ovoid I’ve accomplished with a steatite horn and a pock-marked steatite pedestal on a pyramidal plywood base 72” tall.
I really liked all the elements of this piece raw and natural though the poplar had little figure, and I would not have finished it so except for my judgement of entering a Black & White theme show. Painting in this series of sculptures is usually contrary to the nature of the materials I’m choosing as the materials stand on their own, but it was an ok experimental digression.
Sometimes I feel like stripping it raw again, but rather I will continue to move forward—I like it just fine as I needed to whiten up a bit after sadness that inspired The Black Whole.
