Joe Cool - 2015
This is my second rolling head—it rolls good; it nods even better. This started as a heavy, dense block of heart pine I picked up from a favorite Sculptor, Joe Segal of St. Augustine.
I live with my life partner Jean Marie in an Arts WareHouse that has a gaggle of children running around. They tried to roll Monique, but they weren’t tall enough. Therefore, a short base lathed and bowled out of a spalted and punky piece of maple trunk which presents the sculpture at children’s height.
The gaggle poured into the gallery in sunglasses and saw the finished piece; we rolled and nodded the head joyfully. Then Avalon said, “It needs sunglasses too; like we have!” So came the dark glasses.
Joe Segal loves to wear cool, dark sunglasses. The moment the glasses went on this head it ended up looking alot like Joe to me—hence, Joe Cool.
