The Black Whole - Late 2005
This was another found fragment steatite rock from the Schuyler quarries that had a small hole drilled through it. After two frustrating months from the outset of Katrina in Louisiana being on the team trying to manage the federal response to the mess, I came back for a break from that edge and whacked this piece out enlarging the hole into the whole—the black whole of left-over despondency. Then I headed back to Louisiana and finished it off at the holidays.
In 2014, Charlie Hallock of Lexington, VA was gifted a sculpture by Welsh Construction of the same. He liked this one and its name in reference to his house re-construction. It’s based on black walnut and a concrete cast floor stone.
Thanks to Tim and Janine Welsh for their ongoing support of the arts in Lexington.
