Portrait of a Marriage - 2018

Jean Marie and I have been together as partners in life for forty-five years.  We made a pre-nuptual agreement those years ago, and we live it.  It had nothing to do with money, but rather a definition of values.

I have wanted to develop wall sculptures as some of my wood would lend itself materially to hanging, so I went after this piece as a maquette experiment out of mesquite that is a lovely and workable very hard wood.  Considering the fine wall sculptures of Joe Segal (https://www.joesegal.com), I understand the back to be almost as important as the front in relation to weight and hanging.  The wood is very dark—it didn’t photograph well.  Jean Marie thought the piece maybe vulgar, but I say the nature of the relationship is to the wood.
