Monique - 2014

After a four-year hiatus of finishing a sculpture because of having to continue working a real job for a living on the road, and having excruciating knee pain which is not inspiring for whacking on wood and stone, I got back to it in earnest after a second knee replacement focusing on Heads of which I had four started.

I carved a series of bowls during the sculpture hiatus out of oak which I doled out as presents, and then progressed into a mathematical series of different sized oblong walnut bowls thinking I might become a craftsman for awhile—I didn’t.

So I had a batch of unfinished heads; a batch of finished bowls; two replaced knees and sudden inspiration of a marriage of sculpture and craft—a sculptural epiphany of sorts. I knocked out three heads rolling in bowls—kinetic. Brancusi’s heads just sat around; my Heads are in line with our times. Heads will roll.
