The Whole Truth - 2005

In St. Augustine, Florida my friend and fellow sculptor Thomas Glover White carved large, beautiful, elaborately figured sculptures out of steatite (soapstone) that came from Schuyler, Virginia. The metamorphic stone ranges from a busy mash up of figure to densely opaque that finishes creamy and dark.

I hauled my first load of the heavy stone over the Blue Ridge west to Lexington. I picked this highly figured small stone to experiment with drilling a sizable hole and carving an ovoid.

It is based on cherry and oak and sits comfortably with cartoonist John Baynham’s own sculptures in the Oakland Hills, California.
